Considered to be one of the most eagerly awaited choreographic events in France, the ‘Festival de Danse de Cannes’, a biennial event which began in 1993, presents a programme of international creations, discoveries, encounters and conferences, reflecting the major choreographic movements of our time.
Two international biennial events, in 2011 and 2013, will be entrusted to Frédéric Flamand, whose artistic project for the Festivals will revolve around a common theme: Les Nouvelles Mythologies (New
Mythologies).
According to Frédéric Flamand, “Les Nouvelles Mythologies (New Mythologies) theme has the advantage of making us
think about what is specifically human, about the way dance reclaims the body, about those characteristics which will
always set us apart from machines and images and about how a new humanism may be defined at a moment when
perceptions of identity are changing at the same time as the organisation of space.”
The next ‘Festival de Danse de Cannes’ will be an invitation to discover this universal body language as it is expressed in
contemporary creations. It will testify to the dynamism of the great movements and the diversity of current
choreographic creation but will also be a springboard for promoting new talents by presenting them on the international
scene while not forgetting to put regional talent in the spotlight. “I must admit that the prospect of directing the new
‘Festival de Danse de Cannes’ seems especially interesting to me because I have always been attracted by the creation of concepts and keen to share them with other choreographers. It is an approach I have followed as Director of the ‘Ballet
National de Marseille’ “, concludes Frédéric Flamand.
